Merida, Yucatan — Various organizations and activists fighting for marriage equality — the rights for same-sex couples to wed — announced their strategies for making Constitutional Article 1 a reality.
For the first step, the groups filed two lawsuits against the Yucatan state legislature for its July 15 secret vote against gay marriage, said Kelly Ramírez Alpuche.
One suit, signed by members of the LGBTQ+ community and their families, was filed with the Third District Court in Merida. The second suit was filed by human right organizations in the Fourth District Court, also in Merida.
Equal-marriage bills were rejected by state lawmakers both on April 10 and July 15. The measures would have allowed Yucatan to comply with a 2015 high-court ruling that compels each state in Mexico to allow them.
The press conference, held by various activists, was held at Restaurante Amaro in the Centro.
