Puebla, Puebla — In a historic game for Yoanner Negrín, the Yucatan Leones defeated the Pericos de Puebla 14-1 Tuesday at Hermanos Serdán Stadium.
The win is a good start for the series, the last of two sets of away games before the playoff.
Jonathan Jones, Alex Liddi, Luis Juarez and Leo Heras recorded three hits each.
Jones was a home run short of the cycle, driving home two runs. Liddi doubled and singled twice, scoring three runs while driving in two.
Yucatan had a pair of big innings in the blowout victory, scoring five runs in the first inning and six in the fifth.
In the first, Sebastian Valle drove in three runs and Xavier Scruggs drove in two, while Scruggs hit a two-run home run in the fifth.
Negrin (13-6) picked up the win after allowing three hits over six innings for his 13th victory of the year. He wrote his name in the Leones’ history book, being the fourth most successful pitcher in the franchise with 54 wins, tying Francisco Mota; The Cuban is only surpassed by Salvador Rodríguez (56), Oscar Rivera (77) and Mercedes Esquer (91).
Opposing starter Brandon Cumpton (0-4) took the loss after giving up five runs and five hits while only recording a single out
Jesus Arredondo singled three times for the Pericos.
With the win, Yucatan improved to 7-3 against Puebla this season.
The Leones will seek to secure the series 7 p.m. Wednesday when they send Jesse Estrada (8-2, 4.91 ERA) to the center of the diamond to face Mauricio Lara (5-10, 4.35 ERA). The game can be enjoyed live on La Comadre 98.5 and Facebook Live.
