Tizimin, Yucatan — A badly thought-through pedestrian crossing has made the tiny Buctzotz municipality Internet-famous.
One end of the crosswalk is on a ramp with a wheelchair icon inviting disabled to use it. But on the other side, the path ends at a set of steep steps. Netizens imagined how frustrating the situation must be for anyone depending on a wheelchair.
It’s also painted bright red, inviting humorous comparisons to red-carpet events.
OK, maybe it’s not that funny, but the crossing was odd enough to be fodder for sarcastic memes.
Noe Chan Torres, of the public Works department, ended up talking to a Diario de Yucatan reporter about the situation. He admitted that the crosswalk — one of many repainted in the city — was in error. The wheelchair ramp wasn’t meant for the disabled, but not the entire crosswalk.
The sidewalk opposite the ramp was apparently built to protect pedestrians and buildings from high waters during storms
Mayor Margarita Sánchez Medrano will evaluate the issue to decide if and how to correct the error.
