Merida, Yucatan — Mayor Mauricio Vila warned owners of vacant lots today that they will be fined if they don’t keep their properties clean.
The law requires owners to clean their premises at least four times a year.
Given the emergency situation by dengue, chikungunya and zika, the City Council shall apply the rules to the letter of the law.
“We do not want to fine anyone. The call would be that people voluntarily responsible with their environment, which is responsible to the city, and voluntarily clean up their land. If they do not, we have to take these administrative procedures,” the mayor said.
Fines depend on the size of the land.
City brigades this week identified 140 properties illegally functioning as junkyards.
