Merida, Yucatan — The Guerreros de Oaxaca set up a mid-game rally to defeat the Leones de Yucatan 6-2 Friday at Kukulcán Alamo Park.
Yucatan still leads the all-important playoff series 2-1, and advances toward the finals if they win today (Saturday).
Yucatan tied the game 2-2 in the third after Alex Liddi hit a solo home run. But the Guerreros grabbed the lead with four runs in the fifth inning, including a solo home run by Ornelas.
Oaxaca right-hander Andres Ivan Meza (9-3) picked up the win after allowing two runs on just three hits over five innings. Opposing starter Dustin Crenshaw (5-2) took the loss after he allowed six runs and 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings.
For the Leones, Liddi homered and singled, driving in two runs. Despite the loss, Yucatan is 6-3 against Oaxaca this season.
“The playoffs are difficult games,” said Leones manager Gerinomo Gil. “We will continue to play strong and well-focused on what we want to achieve, I trust that (starting pitcher José) Samayoa will give us a great game.”
Playoff action picks up 5:45 this afternoon (Saturday) at Kukulcán Alamo Park. Samayoa will face Oaxaca’s Irwin Delgado (7-4, 6.35 ERA) on the mound.
