Although coronavirus cases have dropped considerably, three Yucatecan municipalities continue to appear in the foreground of the national map of the pandemic, according to reports from the Geospatial Viewer of Poverty and Covid-19.
The most notorious case is that of Valladolid, classified as the indigenous municipality in which the highest number of infections has occurred in the entire country, with 5,111, and the second with the most deaths, with 272, just two more than the occupant from the first place, which is Papantla, in Veracruz.
Umán and Kanasín are among the indigenous communities with the most active cases of Covid, with 63 and 56, respectively.
These are figures as of February 15, released by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).
What is the Viewer?
The Geospatial Viewer of Poverty and Covid-19 renders a report every fifteen days on the behavior of the pandemic in the 2,469 municipalities of Mexico, of which 623 are classified as indigenous.
According to the report, as of Feb. 15 cases of Covid-19 have been identified in 97.6% of the indigenous municipalities.
In those with the highest number of infections, as we indicated above, they are Valladolid (5,111), in Yucatán, and Tamazunchale (4,775), in San Luis Potosí.
The indigenous municipalities with the most active cases are Juchitán de Zaragoza (68), in Oaxaca; Uman (63), in Yucatan ; Tlapa de Comonfort (63), in Guerrero, and Kanasín (56), in Yucatán. In the rest there are up to 46 cases.
Calakmul
In 117 of the 416 indigenous municipalities with 80% or more of their population living in poverty, there are up to 30 active cases of Covid. The one with the highest number (30) is Calakmul, in Campeche. In the others, there are up to 15 cases.
The report also notes the following:
- As of February 15, 5,321,744 confirmed cases of Covid-19 had accumulated in Mexico. The states with the largest number of records are: Mexico City, State of Mexico, Nuevo León and Guanajuato, in which 44.5% of the total confirmed cases in the country are concentrated. 29.9% of the total national population resides in these entities.
- As of the cutoff date, 313,608 people had died in Mexico from Covid. Most of these deaths are concentrated in metropolitan areas.
- The states where the highest proportion of deaths have occurred are: State of Mexico (14.7%) and Mexico City (13.3%).
- 46.1% of the registered cases of Covid are concentrated in people between the ages of 18 and 39. Of them, 94.7% have already recovered, 3.8% have required hospitalization, 0.8% have already died, and 1.5% of the cases remain active.
- Children and adolescents (under 18 years of age) are the population group that has presented the fewest cases of Covid. There are 320,176 confirmed cases, of which 4.4% have required hospitalization, 2.1% remain active, 93.7% have already recovered, and less than 1% have already died.
