Merida, Yucatan — Federal Police rescued seven endangered sea turtles at the airport on Sunday.
The turtles were confiscated from a local parcel company, apparently disrupting an illegal smuggling operation, federal police said.
Through their official Twitter account, federal police published that when they found these animals, they were found wrapped in packing tape, inside plastic boxes.
The turtles were placed at the disposal of the Federal Procurator for Environmental Protection.
Officials are always on guard for live, illicit cargo.
In February, a rare black jaguar was found in an illegal shipment at the Merida International Airport.
The cat, found in an Aeromexico cargo hold, was treated and sheltered at the Centenario zoo.
