The mayor of a small town in Oaxaca and her colleague were assassinated Saturday, the state’s attorney general announced.
Carmela Parral Santos, 40, who was the top elected official of San José de Estancia Grande, and Hugo Castellanos Ortega, of the civil protection unit, were shot dead inside a Ford Ranger on Highway 200, according to officials.
Seven bullets were apparently shot into the vehicle, they said.
The day before, indigenous teacher Arturo Jorge Ramírez Suárez, who was also a radio announcer in Oaxaca, was found dead.
Ramírez Suárez, who was heard on he 90.1 FM community radio station Tu’un ñuu savi (Word of the People of the Rain), in the municipality of Huajuapan de León, was found dead early Friday, reported Section 22 of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE).
The union’s political commission asked justice authorities to explain the death. In a public letter, the workers demanded justice for the death of their comrade, saying there is an atmosphere of violence towards Section 22.
Later, the state attorney general issued a statement saying that Ramírez Suárez, 56, died of a stroke.
