After surgery that lasted about two hours at Progreso’s Centro Médico Americano, doctors saved a 2-year-old’s foot which was badly torn when her tricycle was involved in the three-vehicle crash.
The accident, at Calle 70 and 31 in the port city, was addressed quickly by orthopedic trauma surgeon Emilio Hernández, assisted by general surgeon Eloy Alcalá Díaz. The procedure was said to be laborious and complicated.
The girl, Elizabeth Alejandra HL, was reportedly in the clinic today, resting after the ordeal.
A 4-year-old boy named Lucas suffered a fracture in his right foot and only required a plaster cast. A disabled woman, 29, suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized. An adult identified only as Enrique, who was blamed for the accident, was also injured and admitted to Star Médica in Mérida.
Enrique was driving northbound in a Ford Escort van on Calle 70 when police said he blew through a stop sign. His car was then struck by a Ford Fiesta sedan driving westbound on Calle 31. The van then collided with the tricycle, police said.
