Merida, Yucatan — The city isn’t just cracking down on street vendors to clear sidewalks.
Vendors were also surprised to find police preventing them from holding their weekly market at Fraccionamiento del Parque, where a large green space is a draw in the city’s east side.
Dozens of vendors are normally allowed to place awnings and tables on the leafy park there. The Thursday fair is popular with bargain shoppers looking for clothes, toys, foods and shoes.
The tianguistas told Sipse News that 100 informal businesses were affected without warning.
City hall staff and police said they were cracking down on informal, or “under-the-table,” transactions.
Earlier, City Council began an operation to remove street vendors from the streets of the Historic Center. The program is intended to be permanent, backed with police surveillance.
