July 4, 2026 by YDN Staff

Tren Maya, the government-run railway operator, has confirmed that a power generator failure caused the delay that stranded passengers for hours on the Mérida–Cancún Airport route, arriving more than five hours behind schedule.

The company acknowledged the incident two days after it occurred, issuing a statement Friday night at 10 p.m.

According to Tren Maya, also called the Mayan Train, the failure was registered around 7 p.m. on July 1, when train 303 made a precautionary stop in the Leona Vicario section of the Mérida–Cancún Airport route. The company said the stop was caused by a failure in the electric generator that powers the train.

“Specialized company personnel activated established procedures for this type of incident, providing information, assistance and support to those traveling aboard,” the company said in its statement. Passengers “remained in safe conditions throughout the process,” it added.

Passengers had taken to social media two days earlier to report being stranded for hours and arriving well behind schedule.

Tren Maya said two rescue trains were dispatched to the site to transfer passengers to their destination station. The company reported that affected passengers received ticket refunds, financial compensation, and free ground transportation to the city center or their lodging.

The company said technical investigations are underway, in accordance with protocol, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
