New Public Pools Open in Mérida as Summer Heat Intensifies

As the Méridas summer heat intensifies, the city has opened new pools for residents to cool off.

The summer heat in Yucatán is a daily reality for residents and visitors alike. Still, not everyone is lucky enough to have their own pool, air conditioning, or the opportunity to make it out to the beach of a cenote.

For those looking to escape oppressive conditions, the Mérida City Council has opened a new public swimming facility at the Parque Ecológico del Poniente, offering a free, accessible way to cool down.

The pools at the Parque Ecológico del Poniente opened to the public today and will remain open through Aug. 30. The facility is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This schedule aligns with the summer vacation period, providing families with a recreational option during the weeks when children are out of school and temperatures are at their peak.

Before the reopening, maintenance crews from the Department of Parks and Gardens carried out comprehensive work on the facilities. This included painting, installing new pumps and filters, placing signage, and tree-planting efforts in the area.

The pools themselves feature a mechanical filtration system, and staff conduct daily checks of chlorine levels to ensure the water remains safe for all users. These measures are designed to guarantee that the space is in optimal condition for the thousands of people expected to visit over the coming weeks.

Mérida has several public pools, but most are in poor shape and open only briefly during the hottest months.

Weather Conditions Driving the Need for Relief

Despite considerable rainfall this season, the heat in Yucatán has not relented. The summer officially began with temperatures reaching extreme levels, with meteorologists recording highs between 35C and 40C / 95F – 104F.

However, due to the region’s high humidity, the heat index has climbed even higher, with the perceived temperature reaching or exceeding 45C / 113F in various parts of the state.

The combination of heat and humidity creates what locals call bochorno, a stifling sensation that makes even simple outdoor activities uncomfortable.

Thursday’s forecast for Mérida predicted a maximum temperature of 39.2C / 102.5F, with a heat index that felt even more intense due to high humidity and direct solar radiation. The National Meteorological Service reported that the sky would be partly cloudy, allowing sunlight to reach the ground and contribute to the sweltering conditions.

The arrival of tropical waves and atmospheric instability has brought some rainfall to the region, but these storms have done little to lower the overall temperature. Instead, they have added to the humidity, making the air feel even thicker. The rain often arrives in the late afternoon or evening, providing brief relief but leaving the mornings and afternoons just as hot as before. This pattern has become typical for the Yucatán summer, where the combination of heat and moisture creates a challenging environment for those who must go about their daily routines outdoors.

Public Pool Rules and Recommendations for Visitors

The City Council has established clear guidelines for those wishing to use the pools. Visitors must wear appropriate clothing, such as shorts or swimsuits, and are required to use the showers to rinse off before entering the water. This step helps maintain water quality and reduces the amount of dirt and sunscreen introduced into the pools.

Authorities have also reminded the public that food is not permitted in the pool area. Running or pushing inside the water is prohibited, and children must remain under the supervision of an adult at all times. Visitors are encouraged to follow the instructions of the on-duty staff, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated throughout their visit. The area includes restrooms and trash bins to help keep the space clean and orderly.

The Parque Ecológico del Poniente offers more than just swimming. The park features walking paths, jogging trails, and bicycle routes, making it a versatile destination for outdoor recreation. Spanning a significant area, the park provides a natural setting where families can spend an entire day without leaving the city. The combination of green spaces and aquatic facilities makes it an attractive option for those seeking respite from the urban heat.

Additional Options for Cooling Off

The Parque Ecológico del Poniente is not the only public pool available to Mérida residents this summer. Since Saturday, July 4, the pool area at the Acuaparque de Vergel has been open to the public. This facility operates from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and remains closed on Mondays for general cleaning and maintenance.

The Acuaparque de Vergel is located in the San Antonio Kaua II subdivision, on the eastern side of the city. It is designed for family recreation and includes artificial lakes, play areas, a splash pad, and slides. The park is approximately 15 minutes from the center of Mérida and is accessible by public transportation. On weekends, the facility receives between 40 and 1,500 visitors per day.
