Mérida will welcome the world’s top young baseball talent when it hosts the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup from Sept. 25 to Oct. 4, bringing 12 national teams to the Yucatecan capital for 10 days of competition.
The World Baseball Softball Confederation announced the tournament shift to Mexico after the Italian Baseball Softball Federation renounced its hosting rights. Parque Kukulcán Alamo, home of the Leones de Yucatán in the Mexican Baseball League, will serve as the main venue. A second stadium is yet to be confirmed.
The 15,000-capacity ballpark opened in 1982 and underwent major renovations in 2015. The stadium previously hosted the inaugural Baseball Champions League Americas in 2023, demonstrating Mérida’s capability to manage international tournaments.
“The WBSC is delighted to bring the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup to Mexico, a country that has consistently demonstrated its ability to host world-class international events,” said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari. “Mérida offers outstanding facilities, experienced organizers, and a vibrant sporting culture that will provide the perfect environment for young athletes to chase their dream ‘For The Title of World Champion.'”
Mexico ranks sixth in the WBSC world rankings and earned its spot as the host nation. The country has deep ties to the tournament, having hosted the inaugural edition in Chihuahua in 2012. Mexico also welcomed the competition in Mazatlán in 2014 and Hermosillo in 2022.
The U-15 World Cup replaced the World Youth Baseball Championship, a U-16 competition that ran from 1989 to 2011. This marks the seventh edition of the current format.
Rommel Pacheco, director general of Mexico’s National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport, emphasized the tournament’s broader impact beyond competition. “It is a city with experience, infrastructure, and a strong passion for sport,” he said. “This type of event allows more girls, boys, and young people to get closer to this discipline and to sports in general, to dream big, and to see that in Mexico we have the capacity to host competitions of the highest level.”
The field includes baseball powerhouses from five continents. Japan, the defending champion after defeating Puerto Rico in the 2024 final in Colombia, qualified alongside Chinese Taipei from Asia. The United States and Nicaragua earned their spots through the Central and North American Qualifier.
Cuba and the Dominican Republic qualified through the Caribbean tournament, while Venezuela claimed the South American berth. Germany and Czechia will represent Europe, Australia comes from Oceania, and South Africa won the African qualifying tournament.
The tournament serves as a critical development pathway for young players. Past participants have gone on to professional careers and national team representation at higher age levels. The competition format typically includes round-robin group play followed by elimination rounds leading to the championship game.
Mexico finished seventh at the 2024 edition in Barranquilla, Colombia. The home crowd advantage could provide a significant boost for the young Mexican squad as they compete against the world’s elite under-15 programs.
Mérida’s selection continues the Yucatán Peninsula’s growing reputation as a baseball destination. The region has produced numerous professional players and maintains one of Mexico’s most passionate fan bases. The Leones de Yucatán have won five Mexican League championships, most recently in 2022.
The tournament will bring significant economic activity to Mérida’s hotel, restaurant, and tourism sectors. Families and supporters from a dozen nations will spend 10 days in the city, with many likely extending their stays to explore the region’s cultural attractions.
Baseball remains Mexico’s second most popular sport after soccer, with particularly strong followings in northern states and the Yucatán Peninsula. Youth development programs have expanded significantly in recent years, supported by increased government investment in sports infrastructure.
The WBSC operates baseball and softball competitions across multiple age groups and divisions. The U-15 level represents a crucial stage in player development, bridging the gap between youth leagues and more advanced international competition at the U-18 and U-23 levels.
